ALBUQUERQUE — Funeral Mass for Josephine O. Abeita, 103, will be 10 a.m., Thursday, June 2, at Church of the Ascension Catholic Church, 2150 Raymac SW. Burial will be in Isleta Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30-7 p.m., Wednesday, June 1, at Church of Ascension Catholic Church. A rosary will be recited 7 p.m., June 1, at Church of Ascension Catholic Church. Final visitation will be 9:30-10 a.m., Thursday, June 2, at Church of Ascension Catholic Church.
Abeita died May 27, 2011.
Abeita was a member of the Catholic Church, a member of the Catholic Indian Center Eucharistic Society in Gallup, founded the Laguna Colony in Gallup, founder of the Gallup Little League and founder of the Sunny Side P.T.A. in the early 30's. She was on the Governor's Council for Indian education, State of N.M., under Governor Mechem. Abeita was a very strong believer in education, was a Girl Scout leader, a life member of the D.A.V., Auxiliary Unit 29 and was the 2000 Grand Marshall of the Leap Year Parade in Anthony, N.M. Her favorite pastime was playing Bingo, and she enjoyed all sports, her favorite teams being the Lakers and Broncos.
Survivors include her children, Joseph Abeita, Andy Abeita, Alfred Abeita, Jacob Abeita, Ernie Abeita, Eleanor Rodriguez, Edward Abeita; 25 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandson.
Abeita was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; sons, Alvin, John Paul; three grandchildren; one great-grandson.
Pallbearers will be Jose Rodriguez, Rick Roybal, David Abeita, Kenneth Abeita, Marco Abeita, and Jacob Abeita.
